With today's far more electronically sophisticated DSLR designs, where aperture is controlled internally by using an electronic dial and button, the display is done on electronic panels, and the top LCD becomes a more useful feature, with a constant up-front reminder of your settings, and being located so using those controls is better facilitated. Most lenses back then had DOF scales also on the aperture ring. Not having a top LCD panel (which was not yet available) was less meaningful because you set the aperture manually with the aperture ring, which displays the aperture on the ring. But there were other more advanced Pentax cameras of the era, which had features I came to appreciate- like a DOF preview, mirror lockup, and more control of flash sync. The ME Super was my second SLR, bought new, and all I had for 8 years. For those casual shooters who like the advantage of using different lenses for different purposes, it may certainly fill the bill. And it is indeed marginally smaller and slightly lighter than the K100D. The ME Super is a beautifully crafted classic compact film SLR.Ĭertainly, the K2000 may have all you need. B&H and Adorama are top two of the dependable stores to shop. I have also read some less than good statements about Broadway Photo.

The K100D is quite a nice camera with a full feature set.

I would be interested to learn in what way he is outgrowing the K100D? If he needs or wants to upgrade to another model, maybe you could put the K100D to good use. This can be adjusted in custom function to be rendered on the LCD screen or in the viewfinder. Look at the K100D on/off collar switch, and notice if you turn it one step further it will close down the lens and render a visible DOF for the aperture setting. I have not checked all that may be missing, but I know it does not have a depth of field preview. But compared to your son's K100D it is not built quite as nicely, not having a top LCD panel, and missing some other rather important features- if you want to get into photography. It is a basic model, a good value for beginners and soccer moms/dads, and it is small.
